ReCurr Plus Tutorial Series — Part 3: Quarterly Discounts
ReCurr Plus feature — Requires an active ReCurr Plus licence (RECPLUS-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX).
A quarterly discount lets you reward customers who pay every 3 months instead of monthly. The customer pays a single upfront amount for the quarter at a reduced rate — reducing churn and improving cash flow for your business.
Before You Begin
- ReCurr Plus is installed and your Plus licence key is active
- You have a subscription product with Billing Period set to Quarter(s)
— OR — you are using the Billing Cycle Toggle with Quarterly as one of the available cycles (see Plus Tutorial 1)
Step 1: Open the Product for Editing
- Go to Products > All Products
- Click Edit on the subscription product
Step 2: Set the Billing Period to Quarterly
In the General tab, under the subscription fields:
- Set Billing Period to Quarter(s)
- Set Billing Interval to 1 (bill every 1 quarter)
If you are using the Billing Cycle Toggle, Quarterly will be one of the selectable cycles — you do not need to set the Billing Period to Quarterly; the toggle handles it.

Step 3: Enable the Quarterly Discount
Scroll to the Quarterly Discount section that appears when Quarterly billing is configured:
- Tick Enable Quarterly Discount — “Offer a discount for quarterly billing”
- Two additional fields will appear: Discount Type and Discount Value
Screenshot 2: The Quarterly Discount section with the enable checkbox ticked.
Step 4: Select the Discount Type
| Discount Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage (%) | A percentage off the quarterly total | 10% off |
| Fixed Amount (R) | A fixed Rand amount off the quarterly total | R100 off |
Screenshot 3: Discount Type dropdown showing both options.
Step 5: Enter the Discount Value
- For Percentage: enter the number without the % sign (e.g., 10 for 10% off)
- For Fixed Amount: enter the Rand value (e.g., 100 for R100 off)
Screenshot 4: Discount Value field with a value entered.
Step 6: Review the Discount Preview
A live discount preview box appears below the fields showing:
- Monthly base price
- Quarterly base price (monthly x 3)
- Discount amount
- Final quarterly price after discount
- Monthly equivalent of the discounted quarterly price
- Total customer savings per quarter
Verify the pricing is correct before saving.
Screenshot 5: Discount preview box showing the full quarterly pricing breakdown.
Step 7: Publish the Product
Click Update to save your changes.
Step 8: Verify on the Frontend
Visit the product page:
- The quarterly price with discount should display (e.g., “R1,347/quarter — save R150”)
- If using the Billing Cycle Toggle, switching to Quarterly should show the discounted price
Screenshot 6: Product page showing the quarterly price with savings highlighted.
How Quarterly Billing Works
- The customer pays the full quarterly amount in a single transaction (e.g., R1,347 upfront)
- The next payment is due 3 months later
- Renewal continues every quarter automatically via the stored PayFast card token
- The subscription dashboard shows the next quarterly payment date
Example: Quarterly Discount Setup
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Product name | Website Maintenance – Quarterly |
| Regular price | 499.00 (monthly base) |
| Billing Interval | 1 |
| Billing Period | Quarter(s) |
| Enable Quarterly Discount | Ticked |
| Discount Type | Percentage (%) |
| Discount Value | 10 |
Result: Quarterly base = R499 x 3 = R1,497. After 10% discount = R1,347.30/quarter. Customer saves R149.70 per quarter (R598.80/year).
Important Notes
- Full upfront payment — Quarterly billing is a single payment of the full 3-month amount, not three monthly payments.
- No pro-rata for quarterly — Pro-rata billing (mid-month alignment) only applies to monthly billing periods.
- Combining with annual — If you use the Billing Cycle Toggle with both Quarterly and Annual cycles, you can configure separate discounts for each.
